Back in the Elites’ chamber, chaos reigned. The once-controlled environment had turned volatile. Holo-screens flickered wildly as reports flooded in—students across the campus were collapsing, overcome by strange seizures. The school’s tech systems were spiraling out of control, overridden by a glitch they couldn’t contain.
The leader of the Elites, still cloaked in his metallic mask, slammed his fist against the table. “What’s happening? We were supposed to be in control!”
A voice from one of the other figures trembled as they spoke, “It’s the obelisk. The blood circuit—it’s reacting to something we didn’t anticipate.”
The leader’s eyes burned behind his mask. “That girl… Amara. She’s the key. We need her blood to complete the circuit.”
Suddenly, the holo-screen in front of them blinked to life, displaying a live feed of the obelisk chamber. Amara and Joh stood at the exit, blocked by the figure cloaked in glitching armor.
The leader leaned forward, his voice deadly calm. “Send in the Shadows. If they escape, everything falls apart.”
Chapter 14: Into the Shadows
Amara’s heart pounded as the cloaked figure loomed closer. She could feel the dark energy pulsing from him, stronger than anything she had ever encountered. Joh tightened her grip on Amara’s hand, her mind racing for a way out.
But before they could move, the figure raised his hand, and the tendrils of dark energy lashed out, wrapping around them both, pulling them to their knees.
“You’re part of this now,” the figure hissed. “You can’t run from what you were born into.”
Amara’s vision blurred, her body growing weak as the tendrils tightened around her throat. She could feel it again—the same pull she had felt in the library, in the depths of the obelisk chamber. The darkness was calling her, drawing her closer to something ancient, something terrifying.
But just as the shadows closed in around them, Joh’s watch beeped. A small, hidden blade shot from the side, and with a swift, desperate motion, she slashed through the tendrils holding them.
The figure snarled, but Joh was already pulling Amara to her feet. They stumbled toward the exit, their breath ragged as they broke free from the shadows.
“We need to hide,” Joh whispered, her voice shaky. “There’s more coming.”
Amara nodded, her mind reeling as they slipped into the maze of underground tunnels beneath the school. But even as they fled, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was far from over.
The obelisk’s voice echoed in her mind, a dark promise she couldn’t escape:
“The cycle must continue.”
